overview | interface | process

Spyfish is a sub-aquatic video camera. The purpose of Spyfish
is to experience and swim underwater through telepresence.
The intended user is anyone aged 5 to 105 who would like to
explore the underwater world as if they were a fish.
The objective was to create a delightful and immersive leisure
experience whilst making the technological complexity disappear.

The STV (submarine telepresence vehicle) system comprises of
the Spyfish, a cable winder, a hub, a hand controller and screen.
On deck, the system simply plugs together and the Spyfish
can be launched into the sea. On-board the Spyfish are two
video cameras, a hydrophone and powerful lights to see to the
darkest depths. Spyfish is the user’s eyes and ears underwater.

Using the wireless hand controller, the user can swim along
the surface switching to the top camera for a periscope view.
By changing the power settings the user changes the behavoiur
of the Spyfish.  Slow and steady to negotiate around fragile coral
or fast and agile to fly with barracuda.
