The Queen’s Jubilee Baton Relay began at Buckingham Palace on
11 March 2002, when HM the Queen placed the message to the
Commonwealth into the baton and handed it to the first runner.
From here, the baton embarked on a 137-day journey of 63,000
miles across the Commonwealth and the UK, until it reached
its final destination, at the City of Manchester Stadium,
for the opening ceremony of Commonwealth Games 2002.
Di Henry, director of The Queen’s Jubilee Baton Relay said:
When we started our journey to design the Baton for The Queen’s
Jubilee Baton Relay, our dream was to produce a ‘living’ object…
something visionary… something that personified the humane
philosophy of the Commonwealth Games, and the people of the UK.
What I now have in my hands is the living embodiment of what
I thought was just an unattainable idea. IDEO has taken a rough
concept and turned it into something quite remarkable – a gift
for the whole of the UK. You really do have to see it to believe it. |
